Sporting 95 Boys Are Finalists at 2009 FarWest Regionals!
The Santa Clara Sporting '95 Boys Team finished the 2009 Region IV FarWest Regional Tournament as Finalists right behind West Coast FC.
Going into the U13 Boys Championship Game, they had accumulated 32 Goals For and only 2 Goals Against; more goals than any team entering finals in all age groups. Sporting, the 2009 Cal-North State Cup Champs dismanteled the Oregon State Champs 4-0 in the Semi-Final game on Saturday, and earned a spot to challenge West Coast FC (ranked #2 in the US) for the Regional Championship. The game was a great battle with the first goal coming from WC late in the first half. Sporting had some opportunities to score, one shot deflected in the last second by the WC keeper, and another shot hit a cross bar. Unfortunately, it was not to be for SCS95's this year. They played a fantastic tournament, and we are proud of the team and coaches! - posted 6/22/09

Sporting '93 Girls Crowned Cal-North State Cup Finalists
The Santa Clara Sporting '93 Girls Team ended the month long Cal-North State Cup Tournament as Finalists in a thrilling Championship soccer game against the Mustang Rampage Team from Danville. The game was hard fought and the Mustang Team scored the first goal on a free kick about midway through the second half to take the lead in the grueling match. Less than five minutes after the Rampage Team scored, Sporting tied the match when a hard shot was deflected off the Mustang goalie, then hit the crossbar, and headed into the net by Mariana Galvin to tie the game 1-1. Minutes later a Sporting player made a silly foul and received her second yellow card, converting into a red card and left the team with 10 players to finish the game. Then on a fast breakaway by a Mustang forward, a Sporting defender knocked down the attacking Rampage forward in the Sporting goal box setting-up what could have become the game winning penalty kick. But Sporting goalie Lindsay Mewes came-up with a huge save to block the shot, and sent the game into overtime. Both teams could not score in the two 15 minute overtime periods, and the game went to penalty kicks to decide the game. Once again, Mewes came-up with an amazing save on the Mustang's first penalty kick, but the referee determined she came forward off the line and the retake resulted in a goal for the Mustangs. It was a questionable call, but the Mustangs were more accurate with their penalty kicks and ended-up winning the thrilling match. Congratulations to the players and coaches for an excellent run at State Cup this year! - posted 5/4/09
